Door dings are the reason paintless dent repair exists. Someone opens a door into your car in a downtown garage, a shopping cart drifts across a lot in the wind, and you are left with a small round dent that ruins an otherwise clean panel.
Nearly all of them are repairable without touching the paint, and most are done the same day.
Why door dings are ideal PDR candidates
A typical ding is shallow, round and sits in the flat middle section of a door, which is the most accessible and forgiving part of the panel. The metal has been pushed, not stretched. The paint has flexed and survived. Access is usually a matter of removing an interior door card.
That combination is exactly what PDR handles best, which is why these repairs are quick and why several can often be done in one visit.
Where dings get harder
- On the body line. A ding sitting directly on a crease is stiffer and slower to move.
- On the very edge of a door. Folded and welded metal at the edge resists movement.
- With a paint chip. A ding from a door corner sometimes chips the paint. The shape can be corrected but the chip remains.
- Over a brace or hardware. Some doors hide window mechanisms and side-impact bars right where the ding landed.
Having several dings fixed at once
Most vehicles collect dings over years rather than all at once. Getting them repaired together is more economical than one at a time, because the setup and access work is shared. If you are preparing a car for sale, trade-in or a lease return, this is usually the single highest-return thing you can do to the exterior.

Door dings and lease returns
Lease inspections generally allow minor wear but flag dents beyond a certain size. Having dings removed before the inspection is normally cheaper than the charge applied afterwards, and because nothing is repainted, there is no refinish work on the panel for an inspector to note. Worth doing a few weeks before the return date rather than the week of.
