Time is often the reason people put off a dent. Nobody wants to lose a car for a week over a parking lot ding. The good news is that paintless dent repair is one of the fastest repairs in the automotive world, because the longest stage of conventional bodywork, painting and curing, does not exist.
Here is what to expect, and what pushes a job longer.
Typical timelines by damage type
- Single door ding or small dent: commonly a same-day repair, often within a couple of hours once the vehicle is in front of the technician.
- Two or three separate dents: usually still same day, depending on where they sit.
- Crease or body-line dent: longer per dent, because the metal is stiffer and moves in smaller increments.
- Light hail on one or two panels: generally a day.
- Moderate to heavy hail across the vehicle: multiple days, sometimes longer on severe storms where panels need extensive work.
These are honest ranges, not promises. The vehicle in front of us decides the number.
What makes a repair take longer
The dent itself is often not the slow part.
- Access. If a headliner, tail light assembly, interior door card or wheel liner has to come out, add time on both ends.
- Panel material. Aluminium moves more reluctantly than steel and needs a slower approach.
- Sharpness. A sharp impact point takes far more individual pushes than a soft dent of the same width.
- Temperature. A cold panel in a Colorado January needs to be brought up to a workable temperature before anything happens.
- Finish standard. Getting the final few percent of a reflection perfect is slower than getting the panel 90 percent flat.
Hail repair takes a different kind of planning
Hail work is measured in panels, not dents. A roof with 150 small dents may take less time than a hood with 40 large ones. Timing also depends on the season. After a significant Front Range storm, every PDR shop in the metro is scheduling further out than usual, which is why booking early matters.

How to keep your own timeline short
- Send clear low-angle photographs before booking so the job can be scheduled accurately.
- Mention any previous repair or repaint on the panel. Surprises cost time.
- Empty the boot or rear cargo area if the damage is on a quarter panel or tailgate.
