Here is how to work out which category your damage falls into before you book anything.
The 30-second check you can do yourself
Run a fingernail lightly across the damage. Smooth, unbroken paint keeps PDR firmly on the table. A chip, a crack, or a scrape down to primer means the panel will need refinishing regardless of how the shape is corrected.
Then look at the shape. A soft, rounded depression is friendlier than a sharp, narrow crease, even if the sharp one is smaller.
Damage that is usually a clear yes
- Door dings from parking lots and garages
- Shopping cart contact along doors and quarter panels
- Hail dents across horizontal panels
- Larger soft dents where paint is intact
- Shallow creases along a body line
Damage that usually needs more than PDR
- Cracked or missing paint in the damaged area
- Torn metal or a hole from a sharp impact
- Panels with body filler under the surface from previous work
- Deep creases in plastic bumper covers
- Damage that has moved panel gaps or structure

The grey area, and how to handle it
Some damage sits between the two. A sharp crease with healthy paint might come back to a clean reflection, or it might finish at a very large improvement with a faint trace in direct sun. Aluminium hoods and tailgates, common on newer trucks, need a slower approach and heat.
The right response is to assess it and tell you the realistic outcome before starting. If a body shop gives the better result, we will say so.
What it means for cost and time
Because PDR skips paint, materials and cure time, it is usually the lower-cost and faster route when it applies. Many single dents are same-visit repairs. Where a panel needs refinishing, the timeline moves into days rather than hours.
