Insurance Claims · 7 min read
State Farm insures a large share of Colorado drivers, so after a Front Range hailstorm a lot of the vehicles that come through the shop are on their policies. This guide covers the parts of the process a driver can actually control, and is clear about the parts that belong to the carrier.
Colorado Dent Solutions is an independent shop. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by or partnered with State Farm.
Start with your own policy, not the claim line
Before contacting anyone, find your declarations page and check two things: that comprehensive coverage is in place, and what the comprehensive deductible is. Hail is normally handled under comprehensive rather than collision. Those two facts frame the entire conversation that follows.
If the deductible is high and the damage is light, read what happens when hail damage costs less than your deductible before filing anything.
Document the vehicle before anyone inspects it
Your own photographs are the record that does not depend on scheduling. Take them in daylight, at a low angle, panel by panel, with the roof included. Add a wide shot from each corner and note the storm date and where the vehicle was parked.
This matters more than people expect. Damage looks different weeks later under dust and different light, and clear early photographs keep everyone discussing the same vehicle.
You choose the repair shop
Carriers may suggest shops in their programs. The choice of who repairs your vehicle is yours. What matters is that the shop assesses the damage properly, uses the correct method for the panels involved, and stands behind the work locally.
For hail with unbroken paint, paintless dent repair is normally the appropriate method, because it keeps the factory finish on the car. Our hail damage repair page explains how we approach it.
Where estimates change during a repair
Hail estimates are written from what is visible at inspection. Once panels are read under proper light, and once access is opened up, the scope can turn out to be larger. That is a normal part of the process and it is handled through the carrier's own supplement procedure.
Our role is to document what the vehicle actually needs. The decision on approving additional work belongs to State Farm.
What we can and cannot tell you
We can assess the damage, explain what paintless repair will achieve, document the panels clearly, and complete the work. We cannot tell you how your claim will be decided, what your carrier will approve, or what will happen to your premium. Those are questions for your agent, and asking them before filing is worth doing.
More Colorado-specific context is in our guide to hail coverage in Colorado, and our dedicated State Farm hail claim page covers the Denver metro specifics.
A sensible order of operations
- Check comprehensive coverage and deductible.
- Photograph the vehicle thoroughly in daylight.
- Get an independent assessment so you know the scale of damage.
- Decide whether to file, with real numbers in hand.
- Book repair early, since metro schedules fill fast after storms.
Send photographs through our free assessment form to complete step three.
